Vestas’ Wind Turbine Breaks Record with 24-Hour Power Output
Vestas, the world’s #1 manufacturer of wind turbines, announced that it achieved a new world record with its V236-15.0 MW prototype. The turbine producing a 363 megawatt-hours (MWh) over a 24 hour period. The turbine is installed at the Østerild National Test Centre for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark. Installed in December 2022, the prototype turbine has been undergoing extensive examination and testing and verification.
Seven months into its ongoing testing program, Vestas announced the milestone for the V236-15.0 prototype’s power performance during continuous high winds. “Seven months into testing, we are excited to see the performance of the turbine at full power at continuously high wind. The verification campaign will continue to achieve the type certification and further demonstrate what a high-quality machine can deliver over time.”, said Jesper Uth, Senior Director Test & Validation.
The V236-15.0 MW is specifically engineered for offshore environments globally. The turbine has a swept area of 43,742 m2, capacity factor over 60%, and 115.5-meter blades that are optimized for maximum efficiency and performance.
Vestas says that its V236-15.0 turbine has a 30-year design lifespan, is designed to withstand extreme winds, and can generate up to 80 GWh of electricity per year, depending on location-specific conditions. The company approach to design encompasses advancements in geared drivetrain efficiency, power conversion, and turbine control systems. The turbine V236-15.0 also benefits from the accumulated expertise of Vestas’ onshore and offshore business experience.
V236-15.0 MW is configured to balance energy production performance with the number of turbines needed. The turbine minimizes foundation requirements, which are often quite expensive and difficult to deploy. The turbine’s blend of power output and efficiency could be key in expanding offshore wind deployments worldwide.
The company hasn’t set a target date yet for when V236-15.0 will be available for deployment in utility-scale wind farms.
