Stellantis Aims to Revolutionize the Heart of the Auto Market With New EV Platform
Stellantis, the world’s fourth largest automaker, and mobility products and services provider, has unveiled the STLA Medium platform, a global battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform the company says is aimed at revolutionizing the heart of the global market. The platform offers a range of advanced features, and promises a range of over 700 kilometers (435 miles) on a single charge, and fast charging capabilities with its 400 volt architecture. The company says the STLA platform will offer exceptional performance, energy efficiency, affordability, and an enjoyable driving experience.
STLA Medium, the first of four global BEV platforms announced by Stellantis, was announced during the company’s EV Day presentation in July 2021. The platform, according to the company, has been designed to meet the diverse expectations of customers, focusing on key factors such as range, charging time, performance, efficiency, affordability, and driving pleasure.
The STLA Medium platform, and upcoming platforms, are the result of the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. The plan includes reaching a 100% passenger car battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix in Europe and a 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States by 2030.
The newly announced platform was engineered with flexibility in mind, allowing for the accommodation of various brands’ passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs in the C and D segments, which represent the core of the global vehicle market. In 2022, these segments accounted for approximately 35 million vehicle sales, nearly half of the total 78.5 million vehicles sold worldwide.
Stellantis plans to install the STLA Medium platform immediately in several plants across the world, with the first installations scheduled for Europe. The rapid implementation is intended to support the company’s ambitious electrification goals.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, highlighted the significance of the platform, stating, “The STLA Medium platform is the result of over two years of dedicated innovation to deliver clean, safe, and affordable mobility. With our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025, we are demonstrating our commitment to meeting customer needs and driving towards a carbon-neutral future by 2038.”
Customer-focused, Customizable and Convenience.
The STLA Medium platform will offer customers the option to choose vehicle options that best suit their driving needs. The STLA Medium Performance pack will offer a best-in-class range of over 700 km (435 miles) based on Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) standards. The Standard pack provides a range of over 500 km (310 miles) WLTP .
With an energy capacity of up to 98 kilowatt-hours (kWh), and a 400-volt electric architecture, Stellantis says that STLA Medium sets a new standard for energy efficiency, fast charging times, and seamless connectivity to a comprehensive charging and services ecosystem that enhances every journey.
Depending on the specific application, the energy consumption of vehicles on this platform can be less than 14 kWh per 100 km. Furthermore, owners will be able to charge their batteries from 20% to 80% in 27 minutes.
Vehicles based on the STLA Medium platform will be available globally, and can be equipped with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The platform supports various body styles, including passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs.
The flexibility of STLA Medium enables Stellantis designers to create vehicles with adaptable characteristics. The platform allows for customizable wheelbase lengths ranging between 2,700 and 2,900 millimeters, while the overall length can vary from 4.3 to 4.9 meters. With a ground clearance of over 220 mm, STLA Medium ensures off-road capability and performance. Additionally, the platform allows for the use of wheels up to 750 mm in diameter. This is particularly key for Stellantis RAM and Jeep vehicle brands.
The STLA Medium Platform is the initial result of the company’s broader electrification plans. According to the company, the capabilities and performance of STLA-based vehicles will adapt and improve over time with the implementation of the STLA Brain architecture, STLA SmartCockpit and STLA AutoDrive platforms – enabling over-the-air (OTA) software and hardware updates. This ensures that the STLA platforms are future proof and allows the company to offer consumers value-added products and services, while also allowing the company the flexibility to implement new connected-vehicle features.
Other future proof details include a family of three, scalable electric drive modules (EDMs). The modules enable propulsion supporting front-drive, rear-drive, all-wheel drive and hybrid powertrains.
The platforms are designed with provisions for future battery chemistries, including nickel- and cobalt-free, and solid-state batteries. This enables Stellantis brands to tailor vehicle capabilities for affordability and performance.
