BMW Shifts Focus to Sustainable Premium Mobility with New All-Electric 5 Series
BMW is ushering in a new era of sustainable premium mobility with the introduction of the 8th generation BMW 5 Series. For the first time ever, the iconic BMW 5 Series will be available with a fully electric powertrain, distinguished by the name BMW i5. The global market launch of the new BMW 5 Series will begin in October 2023.
BMW has engineered its latest generation premium business sedan with a flexible architecture. The vehicle also accommodates highly efficient internal combustion engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid system will be introduced in the United States in 2024. Given the 5 Series positioning in the premium sports sedan segment, BMW will has chosen to offer all-electric, internal combustion engine (ICE), and plug-in hybrid powertrain options to meet the diverse needs of its customers.
The new BMW 5 Series will continue to be manufactured at Plant Dingolfing, BMW’s largest European plant. Dingolfing is responsible for producing BMW’s luxury class vehicles, and also serves as the company’s e-drive production competence center, manufacturing both the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 on-site. This integration of production facilities highlights BMW’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and technological innovation.
The exterior design of the new BMW 5 Series embodies the brand’s current design language, combining sportiness, luxury, and a distinctive appearance. The dimensions of the new model have increased compared to its predecessor, in what the company says will give the car a broader road presence, and improved seating comfort, particularly in the rear.
For the new generation 5 Series, BMW has chosen not to feature the controversial large signature grille that can be found on its 7 series, iX and 4 Series. The 5 Series, in all of its variants, maintain the traditional, yet distinctive kidney grille signature. Given the 5 Series’ positioning, and importance to the company, as a premium business sedan, BMW has decided to play it safe with the 5’s front fascia.
Where BMW decided to break with a conservative approach is with the introduction of in-car gaming in the new BMW 5 Series. The company has partnered with the AirConsole gaming platform. This unique feature allows the driver and passengers to play casual games while the vehicle is stationary, making use of waiting times during the charging process. The gaming experience is seamlessly set up through a smartphone acting as a controller, connected to the BMW Curved Display via the AirConsole app. Multiple players can participate simultaneously, including rear seat passengers.
