Biden’s New American Climate Corps Aims to Train Next Generation On Climate Action
In a significant move to combat climate change and create American job opportunities, President Biden has announced the creation of the American Climate Corps. The program aims to put more than 20,000 young Americans on career pathways in the burgeoning fields of clean energy, conservation, and climate resilience.
The American Climate Corps will offer paid training and service programs that cover a broad spectrum of environmental activities, ranging from conservation and restoration of lands and waters to the implementation of clean energy and energy-efficient technologies. The focus will also include community resilience and environmental justice.
Equity and Environmental Justice
The program places special emphasis on equity and environmental justice, focusing on historically marginalized communities. To achieve this, it will collaborate with various sectors including Tribal, State, and local governments, labor unions, and non-profit organizations.
Multi-agency Collaboration
The federal government plans to launch a dedicated recruitment website for the American Climate Corps, streamlining the application process. To ensure Federal agencies are working collaboratively o implement the American Climate Corps, the Department of Labor, Department of the Interior, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Energy, and AmeriCorps will sign a memorandum of understanding to formalize the initiative. AmeriCorps will stand up a new “American Climate Corps hub,” which will support the American Climate Corps.
State-Level Partnerships to Complement American Climate Corps
The program is also being implemented in a handful of U.S. states as well. Five states, including Arizona, Utah, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Maryland, are launching their own Climate Corps, which will work in conjunction with the federal initiative.
Skill Development and Future Opportunities
Besides tackling environmental issues, the American Climate Corps aims to provide participants with the skills necessary for future high-quality employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. No prior experience is required for most positions, making the program accessible to a wide range of young Americans.
Additional Investments
The Biden Administration is also investing in pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs through various departments. These investments come on top of the nearly $500 million already dedicated to creating pathways into climate-focused careers.
