BMW Introduces China-Exclusive and China-Produced New 5 Series and i5 Sedans
Following BMW’s May announcement of the global-market 5 Series and all-electric i5 Sedans, BMW has introduced its latest variants of its iconic 5 Series and all-electric i5 Sedans specifically designed to meet the preferences of China’s growing automotive market. More than 530,000 5 Series have been delivered to Chinese customers between 2020 and 2022, establishing it as a market leader in China’s premium mid-range luxury vehicle segment.
The new designs feature an extended wheelbase and a range of exclusive features designed to cater to the preferences of Chinese consumers. Beyond the extended physical dimensions of each BMW 5 Series variant, the sport-luxury sedans reflect BMW forward-thinking approach with China-specific digital services integrated into each vehicle’s infotainment system.
Why do China BMW 5 Series and i5 have extended wheelbases?
China’s young generation values unique style and extra space, especially in the rear of the vehicle. The longer wheelbase ensures more legroom. The extended wheelbase also ensures a more comfortable ride, a key expectations of Chinese consumers, as well as give the vehicles a more appealing look based on Chinese preferences.
The new 5 Series Sedan and i5 models also boast unique interior features specific to the Chinese market like the 31.3″ panoramic BMW Theatre Screen, featuring 8K resolution. The China-specific 5 Series variants also feature 5G connectivity, and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.

The China-market BMW 5 Series and i5 variants also offer some additional distinguishing features from their Global 5 Series counterparts. The front section of the China 5 is upright, with an updated take on BMW’s traditional twin headlights, and a more forward-reaching radiator grille accompanied by contour lighting. The rear includes slim LED lights, divided by a chrome strip.
The Chinese variant 5 Series and i5 also offer variations in interior and exterior lighting features with grille contour lighting, and entrance area lighting that performs a five-stage welcome and farewell process. Exclusive to the Chinese market is the illuminated number “5” on the C-pillar, with the BMW i5 featuring a discreetly pulsating blue light while the battery charges. ICE variants display the ‘5’ in white.
Additional features of the 5 Series and i5 that are unique to China include 4-zone automatic climate control, a model logo embossed on the headrests, and seats with a unique quilting pattern and two-tone design.
The China-market 5 Series variants are distinct beyond their dimensions and luxury amenities. Both variants are produced in China by BMW Brilliance at the Dadong plant in Shenyang.
