According to Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius, in order to achieve near-complete electrification, the company would require a minimum battery capacity of 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh), which is equivalent to approximately 8 gigafactories worldwide. Kallenius stated to Reuters, “While we cannot precisely predict the market’s trajectory… If we calculate the requirements for Mercedes, to approach full electrification, we estimate a minimum of 200 GWh globally. Based on our calculations, this would necessitate the establishment of roughly 8 gigafactories across the world.”

Mercedes-Benz did not have any gigafactories of its own. However, they have established partnerships with battery manufacturers, such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), Automotive Cells Company, and Farasis.

Mercedes-Benz, in October 2022, agreed to a Joint Venture with Stellantis, Siemens, and TotalEnergies to construct three gigafactories in Europe.
