Ferrari to Power the Towns of Fiorano and Maranello With Clean Energy Community
Ferrari, the iconic Italian car manufacturer, has partnered with Enel X, a renewable energy solutions company, to create Italy’s first-ever Renewable Energy Community (REC) in the towns of Fiorano and Maranello. The project aims to install a 1 Megawatt (MW) photovoltaic system on 10,000 m² of unused land owned by Ferrari adjacent to the Fiorano Circuit. The system will generate an average production of around 1,500 MWh for 20 years. The energy generated by the photovoltaic system will be entirely made available to the local community. The REC is expected to avoid 450 tons of CO2 emissions per year which is equivalent to the emissions produced by approximately 100 passenger vehicles in a year.
The Ferrari Energy Community will be open to any public or private entity in Fiorano and Maranello, including citizens, institutions, commercial activities, and factories. Members of the REC will have access to renewable energy and can also become renewable energy prosumers by installing or connecting additional photovoltaic power generation systems, such as on their own roofs. The REC will use Enel X’s renewable energy solutions.
The project will have both an environmental and socio-economic impact on the community. By using locally produced renewable energy, CO2 emissions will be reduced, and energy waste during distribution will be avoided. The energy community will also provide significant savings in energy bills for its members.

Because of its scalability and replicability, it can accelerate the process of decarbonisation while reducing the cost of energy for citizens and businesses”.
The project is part of Ferrari’s sustainability strategy, which is based on a scientific approach and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies. In 2022, Ferrari installed a 1 MW Fuel Cell plant and a 450 kW photovoltaic system in Maranello. An additional 2 MW of solar panels will be added during 2023.
Additionally, Ferrari has implemented many innovations put forward by its employees for more efficient use of energy and materials. In 2022, all the initiatives implemented by the plant led to a reduction in energy consumption of approximately 5% per car during the manufacturing process.
The REC at Fiorano is expected to be a model for other industries and communities in Italy to follow. It is scalable and replicable, meaning that other communities can use it as a model for their sustainable energy projects, thus accelerating the decarbonization process.
Other automakers are doing similar projects of varied scope and scale. For example, Tesla has been involved in a number of projects related to renewable energy, including virtual power plant (VPP) projects in various communities in Texas, California, and Europe. It is expected that more auto manufacturers will pursue similar projects as they increasingly transition to electrified vehicles.
